According to figures released by the Scottish Parliament Information Centre (SPICe), small and medium-sized business exports boosted the Scottish economy by £12.4bn in 2014.
The figures suggest that SME exports have risen 59% since 2006, and as a proportion of total Scottish exports, SMEs accounted for a rise from 40.5% to 45% within the same period.
Currently the European Union accounts for around 46% of all Scottish exports, according to analysis by the Fraser of Allander Institute, showing how important EU membership is to the Scottish economy.
John McApline, an SNP MSP:
Small and medium-sized businesses are playing an increasingly important role as exporters. EU countries are our single greatest international market and membership of the European Union allows Scottish businesses to trade across the continent without barriers.
We will make a strong, positive case for the many benefits EU membership brings in terms of jobs, investment and growth – and will work tirelessly to protect access to the European market for Scottish SMEs.
