Craft beer industry says cheers to continued growth

  • UK craft beer market shows no signs of slowing
  • Year-on-year growth increases confidence
  • 170 UK craft breweries have opened in the last 18 months

According to Scotland’s largest independent chartered accountants and business advisory firm, UK craft beer is going from strength to strength.

Johnston Carmichael reports that craft beer sales make up 2.5% of all UK beers sales. 20% of British consumers now say that they drink craft beer. A total of 170 new UK craft breweries have opened in the last 18 months taking the total number of breweries to around 1,300 - more per capita than any other country. Craft beer sales are growing at 23% annually, while the overall UK beer market is flatlining. Some of the drinks industries biggest companies are starting to take an interest in craft breweries, too.

To celebrate the continued successes of the UK’s craft beer industry, an annual event called Craft Beer Rising is taking place on 26 and 27 February. The event’s organiser, Daniel Rowntree, expects 8,000 people to attend. Only 2500 attended the launch event in 2013.

Daniel Rowntree:

"Craft Beer Rising attracts brewing companies from all over the UK along with people who just love beer."

"This year, for the first time, we are running an invite-only session for key beer buyers. It will give our exhibitors more time to speak to the people who can really help their businesses grow. We expect this to be a popular addition to the event."

Adam Hardie, Head of Food & Drink at Johnston Carmichael:

"Consolidation is undoubtedly here. We are seeing, and will continue to see, big players with more investment behind them operating in the British craft brewing market. Last year Camden Brewing sold to AB InBev for £85 million, which got everybody’s attention due to the high price. In Scotland, Johnston Carmichael was recently involved in the sale of Broughton Ales."
